Minibeasts- Grasshoppers

Hello ladybird parents.
Hope you have all had a good week.
This week we have been learning about Grasshoppers and, as always we have created some wonderful pieces of artwork to decorate our classrooms and the children's bedrooms.
We have also coloured, cut and stuck our own creations of Grasshoppers.

In Numeracy this week we have been jumping like grasshoppers. We estimated how many jumps it would take from one white marker to another, then we jumped and found out how many it actually took. We have some sensible estimators in our class.

This week we have also been working on counting in 10's. Having mastered counting in 5's we just need a few reminders about counting in 10's.

In Phonics this week we have re-visited our cvcc and ccvc words, writing our phase 3 tricky words and also had another look at polysyllabic words.

Our big news this week really is about our trip to the Hippodrome theatre on Monday, where we got to join in with lots of circus activities and had so much fun.
Here are some of the highlights from our time at the circus:

After another action packed half term it is time for a half term break.

Please don't forget to have a rest, but if your child does get bored then you have got a little bit of homework that you can work on with your child. Yesterday your child was given a list of tricky words that we have been looking at in our Phonics sessions. See if your child can read them all without any help.

If so then its time for writing. We have been looking at the read, cover, write, check method in Ladybirds to help with these tricky words and the children love showing how much they know.

Minibeasts- Caterpillars and Butterflies

Hello Ladybirds!

This week has been busy as always and we have learnt a lot.

It has been our Caterpillar and butterfly week this week and even Miss Brind has learnt lots of new facts about the life of a caterpillar and a butterfly.

 

Did you know that butterflies only live for 2 weeks?

 

When a butterfly comes out of a chrysalis its wings are wet and it has to dry out in the sun for a couple of hours before flying off.

 

Here are a few pictures of what we have been doing this week:

 

Amanda found number 12 outside on the reception playground.

 



Victoria ordered the caterpillars, starting with the smallest and ending

with the biggest.

 

In PE this week we have been practising catching.

We tried out our skills by bouncing the ball on the ground before

we caught it.

We also tried to make sure we caught it with both our hands and made sure

we were watching it all times.

 



Jayden used the hoops to help him choose a space to bounce the ball.

 



Callum is using both his hands to catch the ball.

 



Bethany is watching the ball to make sure she catches it.

 

 

This week we have been re-visiting some of our phase 3 sounds to make sure that

we could remember them. Sounds that are one letter, we now know really well,

but we are still working on those sounds that have more than one

letter in them.

Sounds such as igh, oa, air and ear are still really tricking us,

so any times that you see or hear these words at home have a

go at writing them down or using bath/magnetic letters to see what

they look like with your child.

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about Symmetry, Days of the week
and subtraction.
The children were able to use symmetry to make patterns and recognise how a
mirror turns the image round.
The children can now recognise which days they usually come to school and which
days are at the weekend. Ask your child what day it is and see if they can use
the language of today, tomorrow and yesterday. 

 

 Ivan followed the instructions to make a fish using the minibeast connex.



Rubie joined the sound blocks together to make her name.

 Just a quick reminder that we are going to the hippodrome circus on Monday morning.

If you haven't returned your child's permission slip then please do so as soon as

possible as your child cannot go without parental permission.

Please make sure your child is prompt to school at 9.00 on Monday

as the coach will leave school to go to the Hippodrome at 9:15.

Minibeasts- Spiders

Hello Ladybird Parents.
We hope that you had a lovely long weekend.
The children certainly looked well rested and came back to school with their learning hats on.

Here are a few things that we have been doing this week:

 Zak made a spider using Playdoh

 Rubie made a spider using Playdoh

 Jake found all the sounds to make his name

  Ashton found all the sounds to make his name

 Gabbi spelt 'groom' using the sound cubes

  Onur spelt 'web' using the sound cubes

Gabbi, Ashton and Jade went 'Bug hunting in the sensory garden'

 

This week we have been learning about spiders.

We spent our Tuesday ICT session researching spiders and found out a lot of facts about them. Ask your child to name 3 facts about a spider.

The children have enjoyed making, painting and drawing spiders along with using different resources to make webs and homes for spiders to live in.

In Numeracy this week we have been problem solving. We found out all the ways there are to make 8. The next day we noticed a pattern and didn't need to count them as much as we thought.

We found out that:

1+7=8

2+6=8

3+5=8

4+4=8

5+3=8

6+2=8

7+1=8

8+0=8

We also found out that 1+7 and 7+1 has the same answer because the same numbers are written but in a different order.

 

We have also been learning about the word o'clock and have been telling the time.

We can now recognise that the small hand is the hour hand and the big hand is the minute hand.

In PE this week we have been focusing on throwing and catching soft balls. The children have really enjoyed practising their skills and are learning to hold their hands together and keep their eye on the ball at all times.

As the weather gets warmer, take a visit to the park and practise throwing and catching the ball with your child.

 

On Wednesday you received a letter about our trip to the Hippodrome Circus on Monday 20th May.

This is just a reminder that the letter needs to be signed by the 17th May if you want your child to come along with your donation money.

Minibeasts- Bees

 

 

Hello everybody.

Look at what we have been doing in Ladybird class this week:

 

 Jayden ordered numbers to 30 with a little help from Miss Wright

 We had a visit in our playground from a duck

who wanted to be Lenny's friend.

Lenny quite liked the duck too.

 Denni-Mia made a Bumble Bee from play doh.

 Gabbi spent ages practising her numbers.

 More teamwork? Jayden, Jake, Denni-Mia, Callum, Onur and Riley

worked as a team to complete the puzzle.

Harvey had lots of ideas using the bug connex.

He also followed the instructions to make one with the help of

the picture.

 

This week we have been learning about Bees. We have learnt lots of information that we can tell our parents.

 

Did you know?

-Bees have 5 eyes (2 big ones, 3 little)

 

-Bees make their buzzing sound with their wings. The wings go so quickly that it makes the buzzing sound.

 

-Bees have 6 legs, (the same as a ladybird)

 

-Honey bees are the same size as a 'Peanut'.

 

-Queen bees are the 'boss' of the hive. They also live the longest (around 6 years).

 

The children have really enjoyed learning about bees this week, they have used their knowledge to help write a class story, sentences and think of bee characters that they use and play with.

The children have also used chalk to draw bees, have made small bee puppets and put together all the different body parts and joined them together using split pins.
We have also tasted some honey, mmmmmmm.

 

 In Numeracy this week we have been counting backwards from 20. The children are very confident in counting forwards but a Little more practise in counting backwards would be beneficial.
Practise counting objects in your home both forwards and backwards. How well can your child do it?
We have also been looking at how bee hives have 'tessellating' shapes in them.
The children have been tessellating different shapes so that they 'fit together'.

In Phonics this week we have been looking a little more at Phase 4 tricky words. We have also been looking at ccvc words such as clip, clap, flat and slim.
The children are getting very good at reading them, but still need to listen for that hidden sound to write them.

In PE this week we have been practising balancing, throwing and catching a bean bag. We also showed that we could throw to 3 different distances including shorter and longer distances.

Minibeasts- Ladybirds

 My goodness is it Friday already?
What another busy week we have had.
This week we have been learning about Ladybirds, which has been a wonderful experience for our class as we are Ladybird class.
We have had fun labelling a ladybird and learning all about their parts.
Have a look at this ladybird to see the different parts:

We have also looked at the lifecycle of a ladybird and made our own during learning time.
We have made our own ladybirds, coloured, painted and decorated them too.
We have also counted and added up the spots on a ladybird for our number work this week.

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about doubles. We have learnt that a double is a number that you can add with the same number e.g. 1+1=  2+2=
The children have really taken to this and have decided that using their fingers is a really easy method for them. (up to 10 of course)
There are lots of games that you can play using doubles at home.
These include using:
-dice
-dominoes
-playing cards
        
In phonics this week we are becoming more confident in writing cvcc words. This is a hard task, so we will carry on with this with our Phonics work.

Unfortunately due to bad weather yesterday we were unable to go to the Reception sports day. The children were all so disappointed so we decided not to waste the coaches and use them to go on a scenic trip along the seafront. From the coach window the children saw the sea, the waterways, the Sealife centre, the Marina centre and the Pleasure beach.

Along with the excitement this gave the children lots of speaking and listening opportunities which they won't forget in a long time.

Ladybird Class

Minibeasts- Snails

 

Welcome back Ladybirds.

After 2 weeks holiday and all the Easter celebrations we are eager to get back into a routine and start the Summer term. With Spring finally here, the weather seems to be getting a little better.

This week we are learning about snails, as part of our half term on minibeasts.

The children have been quite excited about this topic as it means lots of exploring and using tools to investigate in the school grounds.

The children have learnt lots of facts about snails and have enjoyed carrying out much of their artwork on the shape of the snail. We have used glitter, paint and chalk to make spiral shapes, as well as colouring in new designs for a snail's shell.

We have also looked at the work of Henri Matisse and recreated his Art work of "The Snail" using ripped/cut pieces of paper to make a shell design  

 

 

Have a look at our Matisse display the next time you are in the classroom to see our wonderful ideas on Matisse.

 

In Phonics this week we have been working on cvcc words. These are words such as lamp, went, damp. We have been working hard to read them and write them as well. We have found that when we write them we sometimes forget to write the 3rd sound, so 'went' might look like 'wet'. This is a common thing for your child to be doing, but if you would like to practise this skill at home then here are some words that you could use: belt, hand, tent, land, sent, help, sing.

 

In Numeracy this week we have been looking at tally charts. This was helpful when we went on our minibeast hunt in the sensory garden.

Ladybird Class

 

Happy Birthday Sam!

Hello Ladybirds, we hope that you are all ok and have had a good week.
In Ladybird class this week we have been thinking about Birthdays.
Today is Sam's 5th Birthday. Sam is our class puppet and all week we have kept it secret that we will be holding a party for him today. On Tuesday we practised lots of party games that we can play. We have written invitations to each other and have even made him lots of birthday cards. We have been practising singing 'Happy Birthday' but have had to keep it secret so he doesn't hear us. The children have also practised making birthday cakes and put lots of candles in the cake too.
This afternoon we will surprise Sam, sing Happy Birthday, play party games and eat party food as a treat too. Sam is a very lucky puppet.

This week we have also been thinking about Easter. We have made lots of pictures for our Easter display and have designed a very special bunny basket that we will be bringing home next week (with a few surprises in).

Our 3D shape display has been finished so we can carry on naming all of the 3D shapes that we were naming last week. Here is a picture of the display in our classroom:

 

This week in Phonics we have revisited some of our Phase 3 sounds. We are working really hard at thinking of words with these sounds in and then writing them down on our whiteboards. So far we have found words with the sounds igh, ow and ar.

We can also write Phase 2 tricky words and recognise most of the Phase 3 tricky words.

 

In Numeracy this week we have been solving lots of number problems. This has been good for us when we have been thinking about Sam's party this afternoon.

We have solved problems such as:

If Miss Brind, Mrs Whittaker and Miss Wright all have a plate at the party, how many plates will we need?

The children are all getting very good at solving these problems so know that there should be 3 plates.

We can then use our knowledge of adding by asking:

How many plates would we need if Mrs Freeman came to the party as well?

 

So 3+1=4

 

Try using these word problems at home when laying the table for dinner or sharing out snacks at home. See if your child can work out the problem for 'taking away' too.

 

Here are a few of the other things that we have been doing this week:

 

Denni cut out and made a birthday cake for

Sam's birthday. 

 Jessica found the sounds to make the word 'fox'

in the water tray.

Callum found the sounds to make the word 'mummy'

in the water tray. 

 Our Sunflower seed has started to grow into a

small plant. All we need is some more sun

to make it grow big and strong.

Zak, Jake, Jayden and Onur enjoyed

having a tea party in practise for our birthday party.

 

Haven't we been busy?

 

Don't forget that it is Science week next week and your competition entries need to be in on Monday 25th March.

Just a reminder, the competition is to design an invention for you to use at home or for your child's class teacher to use to make life a little easier.

Also you are invited to come into school on Wednesday morning to have a look at what your child has been doing in Science week, so when you come in in the morning you are welcome to stay and have a look at the experiments that your child has been doing and have a look at our science week pictures.
