Fun and games in the snow!!

Hi Ladybird parents.
What a week we have all had. The snow came to Great Yarmouth and covered it with many inches of snow. The children have told us so many stories of their adventures in the snow and according to educational experts, building a snowman is also a very good learning opportunity. The children can plan and construct and also be creative. Building a snowman can help with problem solving and Numeracy skills..... and they thought they were just having lots of fun.
The children have had lots of experience of building snowmen at school too. Last Friday the children helped build many different people with Mrs Whittaker and Miss Wright.

 The children came back to school in full learning mode. They have learnt 3 new sounds and 4 new tricky words. The children are getting very good at forming their letters and are practising at every opportunity. The children have enjoyed writing cvc words in their job of the day and are getting very good at blending the sounds together.
As your child is getting better at blending then they will soon be getting a reading book, (if they haven't already got one.) The children will read with an adult every Thursday/Friday so your child's reading book needs to be in school every week to help us to change their book.

This week your child has been looking at some key vocab in Numeracy. They are now confident in using words such as under, on top off, between, next to, beside, off, behind and inside. We have also looked at comparing sizes by using words such as 'taller' and 'shorter'.
Have some fun this weekend with one of your child's toys by asking your child to place the toy in the room and asking them to use some of the vocab that we have been using.

The children are definitely becoming more independent and looking at the resources in the classroom to see what they would like to use.
Jayden spent his learning time counting 100 beads on a bead string and then telling the adults his findings.

In PE this week we have been working on apparatus for jumping. We decided that it wouldn't be warm enough for the children to get changed into their shorts and T-Shirts to walk out into the cold to get to the hall, so the children took off their shoes, socks and jumpers (whilst in the school) and worked safely on the apparatus.
The children have been looking at safe landings and making sure that they bend their knees. The children have also looked at how high they might jump and the different things they might do with their arms to help them to balance.

Snow Snow Snow!!

What a cold week it has been! The whole of Norfolk stopped, but here at Northgate Infants School we have had a busy week and have made so much effort in keeping safe and keeping warm.

Well done to all those children in Ladybird class who have come to school everyday and on time too!

This week we have learnt some new sounds and are now up to and including 'qu' in the Phase 3 phonics books. Over the weekend ask your child to find words with these sounds in. I'm sure you will be shocked at how much they know.
We are also working hard to write the Phase 2 and 3 sounds, so if you have any spare time ask your child to form the letters and bring them into school for your child to get a sticker.
The children are always on the look out for these words.
Here is Rubie, she has found a q from yesterday's phonics session on 'q' and 'qu'.

The children enjoyed a visit from the Dental Nurse on Wednesday and learnt all about how to brush their teeth and what types of food were important to eat as a healthy snack in between meals.
The children in Ladybird Class were so well behaved and Mandy (the dental nurse) was very pleased that the children listened so well.

In Numeracy this week the children have been writing, recognising and counting numbers. The children are enjoying finding numbers on the number cards and matching them with the bead strings.

The children have been investigating 'Floating' and 'Sinking' and are getting very good at predicting which things will float or sink. Can the children use this vocabulary at home?

Yesterday we joined in with the rest of the county and had snow settle on the playground. The children were very sensible and dressed up in their warm clothes, hat, scarves and gloves and went out to experience what the snow felt like.

Happy New Year

Welcome back everybody. We all hope you had a good break and are looking forward to 2013.

We have made a good start to this year in Ladybird Class and although we have only been back for a 4 day week, we have managed to do lots of learning.

The big news for us is that we now go into assembly with the Year 1 and 2 children everyday which has been very successful so far.

We have started our Phase 3 Phonics, so although we are always looking at what we have learnt, we have also been learning new sounds such as j, v, w and x.
It is very clear that Mummys and Daddys have been looking through the books with the children and this has helped the children lots. Thank you for your support.

This week we have been looking at farm animals and we are beginning to create a lovely farm display in our class with drawings, pictures and animals that we have made. Next time you are in the classroom, come and look at our display. I'm sure you will be impressed.

In our role-play area this half term, we have made a shoe shop, which the children are really enjoying spending time in. Lots of the children have found their 'dream' shoes and are trying hard to walk in the big heels.

Here is Amanda buying her favourite shoes in the shop. She has also found a bag that she likes too.

The children have come back ready to learn and have enjoyed showing the staff in Ladybirds what they have learnt so far in Reception. Some have also been practising over the holidays.
This week we have looked at Numeracy through the context of farm animals and have been counting the different kinds of animals and adding two groups together using the + and = signs.

Jessica showed that she knew her numbers using Numicon and matched the numbers to the pieces.

 

As well as remembering lots of sounds and numbers, the children have also remembered how to work as a team. Denni showed that she could work with Riley, Ellise and Gabbi to complete a puzzle.

Just a quick reminder that Library day is on a Monday, if your child still has a library book then please return it so that they can get a new one.
PE is on a Tuesday and the children will need their PE kits and plasters to cover any ear piercings.

Very proud Parents and Teachers

Hello Ladybird parents.

As you will probably agree, the Christmas play performances were fantastic and made everybody proud. The children worked so hard and really are a credit to their families and of course Northgate Infants School.

As well as practising this week we have also had lots of learning opportunities.

Here are a few of our favourite moments from the week:

special inn that they had made for him.

Chelsie, Amanda and Riley performed a Christmas concert

using their wonderful new guitars.

 

As you will agree the weather is getting very cold and the children are needing warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves. Many of the children are very good at 'zipping' their coats up, but we still have a lot of children who cannot do their coats up by themselves.
Lets see if the children's New Year's Resolution can be to 'Zip' up their coats by themselves. This can be practised lots at home.

Next week will be a very enjoyable, but very busy week. We have something going on everyday next week.

Winter

Hi Ladybird Parents

This week we have been thinking about 'Winter' and we have had perfect weather to help our understanding of how cold it can be. This has helped us to think of lots of describing words, which we have put up on our Snowman display. Next time you are in the classroom have a look on the back of the door and you will see our wonderful describing words.

With all the cold weather we have been exploring ice, thinking about warm winter clothes and talking lots about melting.
Here are some pictures of us exploring on the field yesterday. We had lots of fun, but made sure we were being very safe and warm.

This week the children decided that they wanted to decorate the classroom, ready for Christmas. The children did all the hard work and did a very good job.

By this afternoon we will have finished Phase 2 of our Phonics work. This week we have been working on 'Phonic Friends'. These are sounds that live together with another sound but make the same sound as the single letter e.g. ff,ll and ss.
The children have now been given their Phase 3 books ready to learn the next group of sounds. The children are getting really good at recognising each Phase 2 sound.

How many sounds can your child find in your house?
Can they write them down correctly?

Next week will be very busy as we will be performing our Christmas Play. Don't forget that the Reception play is on next Thursday 13th December at 2pm and on Friday 14th December at 9:30 am.

Christmas is coming, Rehearsals have started!

.........another week is over!
The children have worked so hard this week and have learnt all about the play that they will be performing to their Mummy's and Daddy's on the 13th and 14th December.
Look at Gabrielle, Onur and Denni-Mia making the Christmas sleigh with their bodies.

As always we have been very creative and this week the children have been making houses, kites and colourful dream catchers.

          Jessica wrapped lots of boxes up to make a very shiny bungalow.

 

 

We have learnt 4 new sounds this week and if you are following the sounds in the little red phonics book we are now up to and including the sound 'ck'.

 

This week we have worked really hard at recognising and ordering numbers and are getting really good at using the + and = signs.

Have a go at using these signs this weekend on numbers up to 10.

 

 

Every child worked with an adult this week and ordered numbers 0-5, 0-10 and 0-20.

 

 

Just a reminder that parents are invited into class on Monday 3rd December for 20 minutes to see how we teach a Phonics session. This will involve learning a new sound and activities that you might want to try at home.

Story Week

Hello Ladybird parents!

 

I am very sorry that there wasn't a blog last week, but I was on a super course at the Archive Centre in Norwich which I can thoroughly recommend!

 

Whilst I was away the children raised a lot of money, dressing up for a non-uniform day!
Look at the amazing Pudsey bear that the children made!

 

As ever we have had a very busy week in Ladybird Class. We have been looking at colour and researched a very talented artist called Mondrian.
Have a look at our wonderful display when you bring your child into school on Monday.

 

The children have had a very exciting week again looking in our 'Sound box'.
The children are now up to 'k' in the red sound books. So if you have any free time at the weekend don't forget to look through the book and ask your child to show the actions to you. The children are also able to blend a few of these sounds together into words such as – as, at, pin, sat, mat, pat, cat, dad, dog and kit.

As ever we have been very creative and have made lots of things to help us with this week's topic.

We have been working hard with our numbers this week and I would like to say a big 'Thank you' to all of the support that you have been giving your child at home, it really is helping with their number work in school!

This week's main focus has been on days of the week so if you have a spare few minutes whilst travelling in the car or when you are cooking tea. Ask your child what the day is today, yesterday and tomorrow!

 

Thank you to all parents who came to the class story-time on Thursday. We really were delighted that you were there and if you would like to read at the next one then please let us know. Thank you again to Jack's mum.
