Space!

Hi ladybird parents.

We hope you have had a good week!

This week we have been learning about 'Space',- always a popular topic.

The children  have really enjoyed talking about space and have given some good ideas about what they think it would be like to go to space.

In our class this week we have learnt about the moon, the moon landings, we have even travelled to the moon and tried to imagine what it would be like to walk on the moon.

The children are beginning to understand about the word: gravity and how it helps us in everyday life.

We have made flying saucers, designed space pictures, made split pin aliens, designed chalk pictures of space and painted different planets.

 

The children have made space crafts and vehicles to ride on the moon and have enjoyed designing their own aliens.

 

We have talked lots this week about whether or not we believe in aliens and whether or not the children think they exist or not. The children have been really open minded and have had fun thinking about how many extra arms, legs and eyes an alien would have.

Riley made a space village.

Rubie found letters for her name.

Onur and Jayden worked as a team and made a space village.

Jake spent ages working on his space rocket.

This week we have also be working hard on our sports day practise.

Today you will receive a letter telling you which team your child will be in on sports day.

This will either be Red, Blue, Green or Yellow team.

If your child has an item of clothing in that colour then they can wear it on the day if they would like. If not, ordinary PE kit is absolutely fine.

 

This week in Phonics we have been writing words that have a hidden sound in them. This includes ccvc and cvcc words. The children have worked hard and are now learning to say the word slowly so that they can hear all the sounds, ready to write them.

 

We hope that you have a good weekend and if you have 5 minutes spare have a go at imagining with your child that you are walking on the moon.

We tried it in our classroom and it was a lot of fun.

Circus week!

Roll up, roll up and welcome to the circus!
This week we have been learning about the circus and have really enjoyed remembering our trip to the Hippodrome. We have been building on our memories and have been learning about the history of the circus, what it used to look like, who used to go to the circus and what you may have seen at the circus.
We have had lots of different themed days and have learnt about clowns, performers, animals and the circus big top.
Here are a few of our favourite parts of the week:

 Amanda decorated a clown outfit using counters.

 

Harvey made a circus out of Lego- including animals.

 



Callum also made a model of a circus.

On Wednesday we also had a visit from a 'real' performer who works in a circus. He taught us lots of new skills. Here are a few pictures us pretending to be circus performers:

 We got to chose an activity that we liked.

 Jessica is getting very good at walking on the stilts.

 

This week we have also been practising for sports day. On this day the children will carry out lots of races and Mummy's and Daddy's can come too.
The children have really been working hard, but the best thing about our practise has been the children's wonderful attitude to taking part, not worrying about winning, and encouraging each other to do their best.
We have also been looking at our Phonics and making sure that we can remember our Phase 2 and 3 sounds. Along with all of our tricky words in phase 2, 3 and 4.

Minibeasts- Grasshoppers

Hello ladybird parents.
Hope you have all had a good week.
This week we have been learning about Grasshoppers and, as always we have created some wonderful pieces of artwork to decorate our classrooms and the children's bedrooms.
We have also coloured, cut and stuck our own creations of Grasshoppers.

In Numeracy this week we have been jumping like grasshoppers. We estimated how many jumps it would take from one white marker to another, then we jumped and found out how many it actually took. We have some sensible estimators in our class.

This week we have also been working on counting in 10's. Having mastered counting in 5's we just need a few reminders about counting in 10's.

In Phonics this week we have re-visited our cvcc and ccvc words, writing our phase 3 tricky words and also had another look at polysyllabic words.

Our big news this week really is about our trip to the Hippodrome theatre on Monday, where we got to join in with lots of circus activities and had so much fun.
Here are some of the highlights from our time at the circus:

Bethany was very proud of herself to go on the

high-wire.

 

After another action packed half term it is time for a half term break.

Please don't forget to have a rest, but if your child does get bored then you have got a little bit of homework that you can work on with your child. Yesterday your child was given a list of tricky words that we have been looking at in our Phonics sessions. See if your child can read them all without any help.

If so then its time for writing. We have been looking at the read, cover, write, check method in Ladybirds to help with these tricky words and the children love showing how much they know.

Minibeasts- Caterpillars and Butterflies

Hello Ladybirds!

This week has been busy as always and we have learnt a lot.

It has been our Caterpillar and butterfly week this week and even Miss Brind has learnt lots of new facts about the life of a caterpillar and a butterfly.

 

Did you know that butterflies only live for 2 weeks?

 

When a butterfly comes out of a chrysalis its wings are wet and it has to dry out in the sun for a couple of hours before flying off.

 

Here are a few pictures of what we have been doing this week:

 

Amanda found number 12 outside on the reception playground.

 



Victoria ordered the caterpillars, starting with the smallest and ending

with the biggest.

 

In PE this week we have been practising catching.

We tried out our skills by bouncing the ball on the ground before

we caught it.

We also tried to make sure we caught it with both our hands and made sure

we were watching it all times.

 



Jayden used the hoops to help him choose a space to bounce the ball.

 



Callum is using both his hands to catch the ball.

 



Bethany is watching the ball to make sure she catches it.

 

 

This week we have been re-visiting some of our phase 3 sounds to make sure that

we could remember them. Sounds that are one letter, we now know really well,

but we are still working on those sounds that have more than one

letter in them.

Sounds such as igh, oa, air and ear are still really tricking us,

so any times that you see or hear these words at home have a

go at writing them down or using bath/magnetic letters to see what

they look like with your child.

In Numeracy this week we have been learning about Symmetry, Days of the week
and subtraction.
The children were able to use symmetry to make patterns and recognise how a
mirror turns the image round.
The children can now recognise which days they usually come to school and which
days are at the weekend. Ask your child what day it is and see if they can use
the language of today, tomorrow and yesterday. 

 

 Ivan followed the instructions to make a fish using the minibeast connex.



Rubie joined the sound blocks together to make her name.

 Just a quick reminder that we are going to the hippodrome circus on Monday morning.

If you haven't returned your child's permission slip then please do so as soon as

possible as your child cannot go without parental permission.

Please make sure your child is prompt to school at 9.00 on Monday

as the coach will leave school to go to the Hippodrome at 9:15.
